Steel Guitar Hall of Fame member Billy Robinson is pictured here in the Derby room, playing his ten-string lap steel. What a monster! I've never seen or heard anything like him. Billy pulls the strings behind the bar for pedal-steel-like effects.Billy Robinson
unknown playerThanks to Robert Segal of New York City for identifying this gentleman as Charlie Reece from Hastings, Nebraska, who is playing a custom 7-string Dobro. Reece is reportedly a machinist, and he fashioned his custom slide that is adapted to his hand.
Leonard T. Zinn, Jimmy Day, and Scotty are pictured here having a rap session before Jimmy's turn to play. Jimmy brought Shot Jackson's wife and daughter onto the stage to sing a couple of tunes during his set.Leonard T. Zinn, Jimmy Day & Scotty

I have more pictures of the convention, but they didn't turn out that great. I used a disposable camera, and the flash was too puny for the immense size of the Regal Riverfront ballroom. Darn! Better luck next year. This was my first Scotty's convention, and it was a thrill to be in the same room with my heroes: Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Day. Paul Franklin, Jr. was awesome too, as were Jimmy Crawford, Doug Jernigan, and Joan Herndon.

Hope you liked the pictures. If you haven't already, check out the steel guitar links below. Bobby Lee's website, The Pedal Steel Pages, is what got me started on pedal-steel guitar.
